Conservation Efforts

Because the Bluefin tuna is so awesome many groups have started conservation efforts to promote the sustainable use of the fish. Since the listing of the fish endanger species list in 2016 it gets put onder the endangered species act. The endangered species act "meaning it is illegal to harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture, collect, or attempt to do any of these things. It is also illegal to import, export, or transport and sell endangered species in interstate or foreign commerce. (NOAA). This started the beggining of many of the groups efforts to save the Bluefins population. The efforts started with the creating GRA's "(gear restricted area)  that prohibit longline vessels from fishing when bluefin are spawning (IGFA)." These gear free areas will allow for the fish to greatly increase its lifespan allowing to to breed and spawn many more generations. This is a great way we have been trying to rebuild the Bluefin community.
What is being done about the market of the fish and the overconsumption you may be thinking. Since the species is now proteced it is heavily protected through trade and commerce. As more countries start adapting to this change and consuming a healthy amount to make a sustainable population we can bring the Bluefin back on top. This goes by ending these fishing methods mentioned in the "why" catergory of this blog. Ending bycatch and the overconsumption of fish slowing the sale making the Bluefin harder to get.
